The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (â€śICSIDâ€ť) is an established international arbitration institution which acts as a platform for legal dispute resolution and conciliation between international investors. In other words, ICSID does not itself arbitrate disputes but formulates the rules and procedures for independent arbitration tribunals to resolve disputes. ICSID was formed under the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States (the ICSID Convention). As of to date, there has been over 150 countries who signed the Convention.
The Firm is pleased to announce that our Senior Partner, Datoâ€™ Azmi bin Mohd Ali, has recently been designated to serve on the Panels of Arbitrators and of Conciliators of ICSID in Malaysia for a period of 6 years along with Tan Sri Cecil W. M. Abraham, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Steve Shim Lip Kiong, and Datoâ€™ Azmel Haji Maamor effective from 17th December 2014.
The Firm is pleased to announce that Asian Legal Business Magazine (November 2014), a Thomson Reuters publication, has identified the Firm as the 7th largest law firm in Malaysia. This marks a climb in the ranking from 8th place last year.
This ranking is based on the total number of fee earners in the Firm. Total fee earners include all time-keepers i.e. partners, associates, counsels, foreign counsels and consultants.
Azmi & Associatesâ€™ Managing Partner, Ahmad Lutfi Abdull Mutalip was invited to deliver a paper on Trade and Investment Opportunities in Malaysia at the Breakout Session sponsored by Alkhair International Islamic Bank at the IFN Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 17 November 2014. The Forum was being held for the third time in Saudi Arabia. The Forum was expected to attract a bigger turnout than in previous years as the Kingdomâ€™s Islamic capital market has been gradually picking up and the government has allocated a significant amount from its budget towards the development of infrastructure projects ranging from educational institutions to healthcare to power and transport.
From 12th to 15th November 2014 our Senior Partner, Datoâ€™ Azmi Mohd Ali represented Azmi & Associates at the TerraLex 2014 Global Meeting in Delhi, India. The event which was attended by more than 170 delegates from TerraLex member firms across the globe, was hosted by Rajani, Singhania & Partners, an Indian nationwide law firm with its offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The General Session was officiated by the Chair and CEO of TerraLex, Harry P. Trueheart III, a partner of American firm Nixon Peabody LLP. The programme of events included roundtables, committee meetings as well as specific practice group sessions, along with the obligatory breakfast and lunch meetings.
As most of our clients are already aware, TerraLex is the second largest global legal network with about 17,000 attorneys in 100 countries worldwide and Azmi & Associates is the only law firm from Malaysia which was accepted as a member of TerraLex since 2001.
Azmi & Associates recently hosted an Executive Briefing on Business Succession and Legacy Planning (â€śExecutive Briefingâ€ť) on 4 November 2014.
The core objective for the Executive Briefing was to create awareness on legacy planning amongst the increasing number of high-net-worth individuals who need to have a complete and comprehensive legacy planning in order to ensure the younger generations will be able to enjoy the fruits reaped by their predecessors.

Azmi & Associate has again collaborated with Olswang LLP to conduct a half-day seminar entitled â€śPrivacy Law: Hot Topicsâ€ť. The event was held at the Royale Chulan Hotel on 29 September 2014. There were about 50 participants comprising of administrative, management, legal and human resource personnel from various bodies.
The event kicked off at 2.00 p.m. with the opening remarks from Mr. Ahmad Lutfi Abdull Mutalip, Managing Partner of Azmi & Associates, who acknowledged the fact that Personal Data Protection law is mandatory considering the value of personal data compliance in the business world today. The speakers of the seminar were our very own Mr. Norhisham Abd Bahrain and Ms Marlyn Perone, together with Mr. Matthew Hunter and Mr. Ian Ferguson from Olswang LLP.

With the theme of â€śReshaping the Legal Profession, Reforming the Law,â€ť issues pertaining to the changing environment of the legal practice have been addressed as well as the need for reformation and the development of the law in a frank and engaging setting. The conference, with an attendance of over 900 delegates, showcased renowned international and Malaysian speakers, who set out to chart the future of Malaysiaâ€™s legal landscape.
