The Firm’s Senior Partner, Dato’ Azmi, was in Edinburgh recently to attend to some business and personal matters. Whilst in Edinburgh, as most of the times in the past, he seized the opportunity to do some networking to enhance the Firm’s international network.
In particular, he visited one of Scotland’s largest law firms, Brodies LLP and was received by two of their corporate partners, Charles Smith and William McIntosh.
Our Partner, Norhisham Abd Bahrin attended the TerraLex Global Meeting held at the Westin Grand, Munich, Germany recently from 11th-13th June 2015.
The event which saw 237 delegates from member firms spanning all over the world was the second largest in TerraLex’s 25-year history. The member firm hosting the Global Meeting in Munich was SKW Schwarz, a German legal firm of 100 lawyers.
The General Session started off with Harry P. Trueheart III, the Chair and also the CEO of Nixon Peabody LLP New York, giving a warm welcoming speech followed by the progress updates of 2014. In summary, 2014 brought in new referrals amounting to USD6 million in fees while USD4.5 million in fees was the carryover from earlier referrals of the previous year.
The day I descended upon Edinburgh, it was overrun by runners – the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2015 was in full scale, with 30,000 runners let loose on the streets of Edinburgh that balmy day of 31 May 2015.
I immediately wished I had registered for the run, but I was on another mission. On a much smaller scale, Edinburgh was also the meeting point for a handful of oil & gas contract practitioners, there to attend the Model Contracts Workshop organized by the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (“AIPN”).
The aim of the Workshop is simple: it brings together personnel involved in the negotiation of oil & gas contracts worldwide, it brainstorms issues encountered in contract negotiation, and comes to an agreeable provision in a standard form contract that may address such issues. Needless to say, a certain amount of oil & gas contract experience is a pre-requisite. In case you do not have that, a marathon of a different kind is inevitable.

Azmi & Associates’ Shipping, Insurance and International Trade Practice continued its market outreach initiatives by reaching out to the industry and clients. The Head of Practice, Mr. Philip Teoh, took part in industry conferences and workshops reaching out to the diverse sectors of the industries within and without Malaysia such as the Malaysian Oil and Gas Council, Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM), PORAM, and at workshops organized by the Kuala Lumpur Legal & Business Institute (KLBI). These initiatives followed presentations outside of Malaysia in March and April at a Terralex meeting in Manila, the Philippines, and in Myanmar to the Myanmar Marine Department.
Business development in any legal practice is about availing the best legal services and delivering these services to the right clients in the most efficient manner. Most law schools do not teach these skills and most law firms today assume lawyers would have developed these skills on their own as they progress in their career.
The actual fact is that if business development programme is not part of a practitioner’s menu, the practice would likely be a small one, serving family members and its businesses and close friends and their businesses. Survival of such practices would not usually last beyond the retirement of its founder. Unfortunately, this category of practice makes up most of new entries into the legal sector.
In line with the Azmi & Associates’ strategy to invest in its lawyers’ career development, the Firm took the initiative to organize a 1-Day Lawyering Skills Workshop, a Practical Training to Becoming Lawyers and In-house Counsels Par-Excellence.
