Peter Drucker famously stated that when management is doing things right, leadership is doing the right things. Great leaders possess dazzling social intelligence, a zest for change, and above all, vision that allows them to set their sights on the things that truly merit attention.
True leadership is much more than authority and recognition from the outside world. Instead, leadership is all about developing people and helping others reach their full potential. It’s about equipping others with the right tools and strategies to not only maximize the success of an organization but also the lives of individuals. It’s about breaking down barriers and leading others through the uncertainty of the future.
In addition to that, the best leaders are not only succeeded at helping their team win championships or organizations reach new milestones and dominate the marketplace, but they deeply cared for people and understood what a privilege it is to be a leader.
Definitely, a great leader would not achieve a great result without having a great team. Whether it’s a functional team, a team of managers, or a project team, people get most done when they work together effectively. So when members of a team don’t work well together, performance and productivity could be affected. That is certainly not a good signal for a company to maintain its momentum in the business world.

After a successful turnout in the December Session, our Partner and Head of Shipping, Insurance and International Trade Practice Group, Mr Philip Teoh had conducted a similar repeat session to accommodate the overwhelming interest from both upstream and downstream players of the Oil & Gas industry. With support from the Malaysian Oil & Gas Council (MOGSC) and the Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM), our list of participants extended to contractors, offshore suppliers and marine insurers.
The second session in January was conducted in the timeliest manner as the nation’s main Oil & Gas company rolled out its projected operating expenditure and capital expenditure. With growing negativity surrounding the market outlook, the briefing had navigated around claims and disputes which would foreseeably be seen to arise out of the current market trend. Covering a wide scope of disputes ranging from nonfulfilment of contractual obligation to insurance claims, the well-informed participants were quick and eager to grasp the view of the oil & gas market from the legal perspective.
In addition to discussing various methods of dispute resolution, the crowd was also entertained with recordings of trial proceeding of a landmark admiralty case and other notable maritime incidents. Overall the talk was a resounding success having managed to attract persons from all level and branch of the oil and gas industry.

As part of our continuing industry outreach, two talks were conducted at the Azmilaw Academy.
Both attracted overwhelming response as the topics were topical and relevant to the industry.
The first talk conducted by Senior Associate Melinda Marie D’Angelus was on Employment Law and HR Issues. The talk covered the gamut of employment law issues relevant to termination of employment and the process of a domestic inquiry.
The talk was attended by various in house counsels and human resource personnel. Our Senior Associate touched on the methods and guidelines in dealing with the various modes of termination such as dismissal for misconduct, termination for poor performance, constructive dismissal and retrenchment. A brief overview of the process of a domestic inquiry was also covered and our Senior Associate also had the opportunity to engage in a lively Q & A Session with the participants. Another session on Industrial Relations will be held early next year.
