The Firmâ€™s Managing Partner who is also the Head, Global Financial Services & Islamic Banking practice, Ahmad Lutfi Abdull Mutalip attended the Terralex Annual General Meeting in New York City, USA from 21 September 2016 to 24 September 2016. This year also marks the 25th Anniversary of the second largest legal network in the world and the theme chosen was â€ś25 Years of Seamless Servicesâ€ť.
From a humble beginning with only 22 firms in 20 countries in 1991, Terralex has grown leaps and bounds to where it is today with 146 firms in 101 countries with 19,000 lawyers. The purpose of this Terralex network of friendly law firms is one: To serve clients seamlessly wherever they are.
Azmi & Associates is indeed honoured to be admitted as the sole Malaysian representative of Terralex since 2001 although the Firm only actively participated in the network from 2004 onwards when we attended the meeting in Seoul, South Korea.
We can attest that the clients of the Firm have benefitted immensely from our association in this network, especially in terms of work coordination in multijurisdictional exercises.
On 3 September 2016, our own Zuhaidi Mohd Shahri had been invited by PropertyGuru Pte Ltd in Singapore to present on Financing Loan from Conventional and Islamic Banking Systems.
The presentation provides an insight to prospective buyers and investors on the various structures of Islamic loans such as Al-Mudharabah, Al-Musharakah, Ijarah, Bai Bithaman Ajil, Murabahah and many more.
The aim for the presentation is to introduce the world to the growth of Islamic finance in the past decade in areas of property acquisition.
In line with the newly announced Malaysia-Singapore HSR, this event organized by PropertyGuru Pte Ltd provides a platform for developers such as MRCB, Zeon Properties Group and others to promote their new infrastructure projects especially in Nusajaya, Johor where the development projects are at its peak.
Azmi & Associates has been awarded yet again with the Employer of Choice Award for Malaysian legal market for year 2016. This is the Firmâ€™s seventh consecutive year winning the award since 2010. It was quoted that an associate from the Firm commented that Azmi & Associates provides â€śchallenging tasks and endless opportunity, as long as Iâ€™m willing to learnâ€ť. Other winners of the award include Tay & Partners, Wong & Partners and Zul Rafique & Partners.
Asian Legal Business (â€śALBâ€ť) publishes the full result of Employer of Choice 2016 in its April 2016 issue. The ALB Employer of Choice Rankings were compiled taking into account responses from more than 3,500 law firms employees across Asia, ranging from managing partners to paralegals, as well as ALBâ€™s own market knowledge.
The survey was open in the months of February and March, and law firms have been ranked on the basis of job satisfaction, remuneration , work-life balance, career prospect, mentorship, job security and other aspects, with respondents being asked to submit their inputs/responses anonymously to help maintain fairness and objectivity. With the conferment of this award for the seventh year to the Firm, and together with the support from its valued employees, the Firm is more determined to strive towards becoming an outstanding employer in the legal industry, not only in the Malaysian legal market but also on an international level.
Azmi & Associatesâ€™ commitment to corporate social responsibility constitutes a significant portion of the Firmâ€™s practice. As part of its corporate social responsibility, Azmi & Associates just like previous years, was once again present at Taylorâ€™s University Lakeside Campus this year for the Taylorâ€™s Law School Academic Award Ceremony.
This Academic Award Ceremony was held on 2nd September 2016 at Taylorâ€™s University Lakeside Campus. In this event, awards were presented to law students who have received top marks in their examinations and who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.
The Firm is pleased to announce the winner of the 2016 Associates High Achieverâ€™s prizes is Ng Yi Ling , who received the Azmi & Associates High Achieverâ€™s Award for Best Overall Performance in Contract Law for August 2015 Cohort and Award for Best Overall Performance in Constitutional & Administrative Law for August 2015 Cohort.
On a business trip in early July 2016 to meet with a client in Hong Kong, the team from Azmi & Associates, comprising of the Firmâ€™s Senior Partner, Datoâ€™ Azmi Mohd Ali, together with Lee King Hing and Justin Dominic Wong, decided to visit and build relationships with various Hong Kong law firms.
On the night of arrival in Hong Kong, two partners of Zhong Lun Law Firm (a member partner of the Terralex Network), which is one of the largest Chinese law firm, namely Mr Victor Yang and Mr Kevin Lee, invited the team over to the prestigious Hong Kong Club for drinks and snacks while catching up with each other. The following morning, the team visited Zhong Lun Law Firmâ€™s office at Jardine House. There the team was met by Mr Mark Bedford, Mr Gilbert Leung and Ms Dorothy Siron and was given a tour of the firmâ€™s office. The team, in particular Datoâ€™ Azmi, rekindled old ties with the partners of Zhong Lun Law Firm and discussed current economic and legal situations in Hong Kong and China.
On 23 May 2016, the Firm, in collaboration with AsiaLegal LLC and Holman Fenwick Willan LLP, conducted an industry briefing on current issues in relation to maritime law. The first session by our Partner, Philip Teoh, introduced the participants to the landscape of maritime law in Malaysia. Besides providing an insight of the structure of the Admiralty courts in our country, the crowd was also enlightened on the various possibilities where such claims under the maritime laws might arise.
Mr. Timothy Tan the Director of AsiaLegal LLC, who has close to 28 years of experience practicing in Singapore, spoke on the procedure and practical circumstances of instituting a ship arrest under the Singaporean Admiralty Court's jurisdiction. Speaking from personal experience, the speaker was keen to share from a practitioner's point of view. It was indeed insightful for the participants to be exposed to the Admiralty practice of our neighboring jurisdiction, Singapore.
The TerraLex Global Meeting 2016 was held at the JW Marriott, Lima Peru from 11 May 2016 to 14 May 2016. Our Partners, Farhah Hayati Mamat, Sharizan Sharif, Moo Eng Thing and Senior Associate, Melinda Marie D'Angelus attended the event as representatives of the Firm. The Global Meeting was hosted by the gracious host partner firm, Rubio Leguia Normand, a legal firm based in Lima, Peru, comprising of approximately 60 lawyers. The Global Meeting kicked off on 12 May 2016 with the TerraLex Womenâ€™s Global Connection Breakfast and Meeting where Silvia Coulter, the founding principal of LawVision Group gave a truly insightful and engaging workshop to fellow women lawyers on how women lawyers can best develop their own personal business development plan. She also shared her own business development strategies and key client retention and growth strategies as well as process improvement initiatives.
Later on in the day, the various practice groups, Mergers and Acquisitions, Labour and Employment, Private Equity, International Dispute met for a social hour to network and mingle with fellow layers in their respective groups. The welcome dinner at the JW Marriott was a good opportunity for delegates to network and savour local delicacies. There was a special introduction for delegates attending the meeting for the first time.
On 27 April 2016, the Firm held an executive briefing session on â€śUpdates on the Companies Bill 2015: Shaking the Corporate Sceneâ€ť. The briefing session was conducted at the Azmilaw Academy by Norhisham Abd Bahrin, Partner of the Corporate, Mergers & Acquisitions Practice Group. Approximately 50 people from public and private companies, government related entities and professionals from various other industries attended the session.
The objective of the session is to keep the firmâ€™s clients updated with the major reforms to the current Malaysian Companies Act 1965 in anticipation of the passing of the new Companies Act. The main objectives of the Bill are to modernize the Malaysian corporate legal landscape in line with other progressive corporate law regimes such as Australia and the United Kingdom, simplify the conduct business in Malaysia and to reduce associated costs. As at the current date, the Bill has been passed by both the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) and the Dewan Negara (Senate) on 4 April 2016 and 28 April 2016 respectively.
A one-stop centre, Pusat Runding Cara Usahawan Negeri Sembilan (PRUNS) has been set up at DS2 Mall, Seremban 2 to assist entrepreneurs in the state.
PRUNS which houses various agencies under one roof is formed by Negeri Sembilan State Development Corporation (PKNNS) and chaired by PKNNS Chief Executive, Datoâ€™ Hasnul bin Mohamed.
Among the agencies available at PRUNS are Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga (TEKUN), SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp), Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) and also our Firm.
This programme is aimed to assist Bumiputera entrepreneurs and guide them in various aspects of knowledge to start and run their businesses effectively. It is the intention of the state government of Negeri Sembilan to create as many elite group of entrepreneurs as possible in order to achieve its goal as stated in Model Pembangunan Usahawan Bumiputera Negeri Sembilan 2015-2025.
Our Firm has been identified by PKNNS as the solicitor to provide legal advice to the entrepreneurs, every Thursday of the week starting from 17 March 2016 until end of April 2016.
