In line with the Firm’s principle of delivering integrated, innovative and comprehensive solutions to clients, Azmi & Associates took the initiative to instill the knowledge of capital investment in their lawyers by organizing an in-house “Investment Appraisal and Analysis Training” programme.

The training was conducted by Mr. Winson Han on 7 March 2017, at Azmilaw Academy. Mr. Winson Han is a Chartered Accountant by profession and has over 30 years of experience having served in various roles as practicing accountant, company secretary, financial controller and management consultant. Mr. Winson started off with an overviewof investment appraisal. He explains that it is a planning process which facilitates the determination of the company's investments, both long and short term.

The components that come under capital investment appraisal include, inter alia, property, equipment, research and development projects, advertising campaigns, new plants, and new machinery. The attendees were introduced to a range of methods that most companies use for capital investment appraisal, which include, among others, average rate of return, payback method, discounted cash flow, and internal rate of return.

Through this training, the attendees had gained an insight on the capital investment appraisal and analysis. It is hoped that the knowledge and skill gained will be beneficial in delivering legal services to the clients in the most efficient manner.

Capital investment is a medium or long-term strategic decision of a company, which often involves multimillion ringgit investment, and is difficult to change directions once it is started.

Making a wrong decision can be very costly, so it is important that any company undertakes a thorough appraisal of their potential capital investment projects prior to committing to them.
